A millennium city like Gurgaon needed its own newspaper: Atul Sobti

Arap Media Ventures Pvt Ltd, a media company owned by Atul Sobti, has launched a new weekly newspaper for the city of Gurgaon from August 26, 2011. The paper was unveiled at a ceremony held at Kingdom of Dreams on August 25, which was attended by the who’s who of the city.

Speaking on the occasion, SS Deswal, Police Commissioner, Gurgaon, remarked, “Gurgaon is one of the fastest growing cities in India today. This city has made the state and country proud. In 2010, when real estate was all time low, Gurgaon was the only city that saw appreciating prices. It manufactures 50 per cent of the total cars sold in India today and 70 per cent of the total bikes sold. As the city grows, there was a need for someone to project it right in the mind of the world, showcase the vibrant culture it has and add to the strength of the city.”

Atul Sobti unveiled the look and feel of the weekly along with introducing the whole team behind the initiative. The newspaper would cover politics, business, social, lifestyle, global news and will also have syndicated content from other publishers.

Sobti said, “Starting a newspaper has been a passion for long. Media has the ability to influence decisions and guide people in an impartial way. At Friday Gurgaon we hope to keep some traditions alive by being credible and relevant. The youth today wants to own their things – my phone, my city – and thus we are giving them their own newspaper. We would also have a strong focus on the Kids section as they are the future.”

Atul Sobti was Managing Director & CEO of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd till August 2010.
