Tilak Kumar appointed Editor-in-Chief of Deccan Herald and Prajavani

In a swift move which came as a surprise to many in Banglore media, the management of Mysore Printers Limited, which owns Deccan Herald and Kannada newspaper Prajavani, has appointed KN Tilak Kumar as Editor-in-Chief. Kumar, who was Joint Managing Director of the two newspapers, succeeds his younger brother KN Shantha Kumar who was Editor of both newspapers since 2001.

The change which happened overnight has raised many eyebrows. According to a newspaper report, even the Board of Directors was not informed about the change of guard. When contacted Tilak Kumar refused to comment on the development.

Known for his dynamism, Tilak Kumar was hitherto handling the circulation of both the newspapers. He was responsible for the growth of Prajavani in some rural pockets. But he could not make substantial inroads into the much more vibrant Vijay Karnataka, the No.1 Kannada daily.

Shantha Kumar had made significant changes in the content and design of the two newspapers since taking over as Editor. But he could not pose a serious challenge to competitors. Shantha Kumar was known for his soft, humble and friendly behaviour. These qualities enabled him to take his staffers into confidence. He was also a good photo-journalist and haad covered several national and international sports events including the Olympics.
