Sunil Lulla quits Times Now; destination next touted to be Alva-Turner JV

After a stint of three years, Sunil Lulla has put in his papers at Times Global Broadcasting Ltd, which airs English news channel Times Now. Thoug Lulla has not confirmed the development, various industry sources informed that he was currently serving his notice period, and would be with the organisation till January 31, 2008.

The development has been announced internally. Even as details were not available, it doesn’t appear that Times Global Broadcasting has decided on Lulla’s replacement yet. As for destination next, speculations are rife that Lulla would be joining the recently formed Alva-Turner JV that would be launching a Hindi general entertainment channel and other Indian language channels targeted at the urban Indian audience.

Sources familiar with the situation divulged that Lulla would take the venture forward as CEO. Alva-Turner JV officials refrained from offering any comments on the development.

Lulla has been at the helms of Times Global since its launch in 2005. Under his leadership, Times Now has grown strong and competes closely for the numero uno slot in the genre. Highly placed executives also informed that Times Global also intended to launch another news channel later in the year.

Prior to Times Global, Lulla was with SET India in various roles, the last being the head of the network’s digital and licensing business, prior to which he had in charge of both the programming and marketing mandates of SET’s flagship channel Sony, where he brought programming initiatives like ‘Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin’ to the channel.

Lulla was CEO of Valuebridge, a consultancy business set up by venture capital firm AtIndia and advertising major HTA (now JWT). He has also been CEO of Indya.com. Other senior management positions that he has held in his career include VP-Marketing at United Distillers and Vintners; General Manager, MTV India; Client Services Director at JWT (Taiwan); GM-Marketing at HMV; and Associate Account Director at HTA (now JWT). He is an alumnus of SP Jain College.
