Prabhu Chawla to quit India Today Group; set to join The New Indian Express

Well known journalist and Editor (Languages) at the India Today Group, Prabhu Chawla, is set to move out of the group. Industry sources have confirmed that Chawla is joining The New Indian Express newspaper. While it is not known what would be Chawla’s designation, he will be replacing Aditya Sinha, who is joining DNA as Editor-in-Chief from January 17, 2011.

When contacted by exchange4media, Chawla did not respond. However, speculation has been rife since September 2010, when the India Today Group had appointed MJ Akbar as Editorial Director of India Today - English and India Today - International and their extensions. Chawla was then given the charge of Editor (Languages) and CEO. Before holding this post, he had worked as Editorial Director of the magazine India Today for 14 years.

It may be recalled that in September 2010, the senior level restructuring had seen the formation of a new special business unit to focus on Indian language publishing and all related extensions in the Indian language domain. All India Today language brands were assigned to this new SBU, which was placed under the leadership of Chawla.

Chawla had started his journalistic career with India Today and had then joined The Indian Express. He then rejoined India Today, first as Editor of the Hindi edition, and then the English edition too.

The New Indian Express publishes from cities in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, besides Orissa, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Kochi and Bhubaneswar. In all, the English daily publishes from 22 centres in the South.
