MIH is witnessing some action on the appointment front. Close on the heels of Ashish Kashyap joining the group as CEO of Internet operations in India, Arunava Sinha has been appointed as Head of Content and Services, MIH. He moves after a short stint with the India Today Group as an Executive Editor.

MIH is part of the multinational media group Naspers Ltd, having operations in 50 countries comprising pay television platforms, Internet operations, instant messaging services and related technologies.

Speaking to exchange4media, Kashyap said, “We will basically focus on three areas – to build innovative Internet and mobile applications, unleashing new consumer Internet brands and investing in new Internet start-ups and acquisitions in the same space.”

Commenting on Sinha’s appointment, Kashyap said, “I had great working relationship with Arunava during my Indiatimes days. He is one of the most talented persons in the industry. I am very excited about having him in my team.”

Speaking about his new role at MIH, Sinha said, “We are planning to shake a few trees. The whole idea is to do something dramatically different rather than doing things in the conventional way, which brings a new level of experience to the consumer. And that’s a great opportunity.”

“The consumer always looks at things from two angles, it’s either useful or entertaining. It’s really a huge challenge to engage and hold the attention of the consumer in the Internet space, where numerous options are available to him all the time,” Sinha further said.

Kashyap has over 12 years’ experience spanning Internet, television and radio businesses. Prior to joining Google India, where he was Country Head, Domestic Operations, Kashyap was General Manager, e-Commerce, at Indiatimes.com. He also had stints at MTV and Times FM.

Naspers’ most significant operations are located in South Africa, where it generates approximately 72.7 per cent of its revenues. The group also operates in Sub-Saharan Africa, Greece, Cyprus, the Netherlands, the US, Thailand and China. The group has been focusing on building businesses across BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and Southern Africa). The group recently invested $422 million in Brazil’s prominent media business ‘Abril’.

The strategy of Naspers is to create media content, build brand names around it, and manage the platforms distributing the content. Naspers then delivers its content in a variety of forms and through a variety of channels, including television, Internet services, newspapers, magazines and books.
