LG restructuring: Marketing & Sales functions swapped and split between Girish Rao, Girish Bapat

LG Electronics India has effected another significant change in its top management, according to sources close to the development. The functions of Girish Rao, VP-Sales, and Girish Bapat, VP-Marketing, have been swapped and split. Rao will now be VP-Sales & Marketing, North and East. On his part, Bapat will now be VP-Sales & Marketing, South and West, and will shift base to Pune. The sources inform that an internal circular has already been put out to this effect.

No formal comments were available from LG at the time of filing this report. A formal announcement is expected shortly from K R Kim, President, LG Electronics, South West Asia, and Managing Director, India.

There have been quite a lot of changes at LGEIL’s top management in the past six months. In August last year, in major development in its marketing set-up, LGEIL had appointed Girish Bapat as VP-Marketing, responsible for the overall marketing functions of the consumer durables major. All team heads were reporting to Bapat, who in turn reported to Kim. Bapat took charge from August 12. He had moved in from Mahindra & Mahindra, where he was heading the marketing division. Before M&M, he was with Godrej.

With Bapat’s entry, Salil Kapoor, who was LG’s Marketing Head and official spokesperson for the company, was redesignated as Head of Marketing Services and Brand, reporting to Bapat. It was not long before Kapoor put in his papers in September 2005.

Meanwhile, in February this year, Deba Ghosal, Head, Product Marketing (DDM), with LGEIL, put in his papers after a five-year stint. Ghosal was heading the marketing activities of the high-profile divisions of consumer electronics, IT and GSM. Besides the initial years in LG’s marketing communication, which took the brand salience to distinct numbers, he had been instrumental in creating and strengthening new functions like Product Planning and Brand Management at LGEIL.

As for Rao, there have been quite a few changes in his job profile since he joined LGEIL. He began as VP-Sales, all-India. Then he was made VP-Sales, South and West. Thereafter, Rao again became VP-Sales, all-India. And now, this latest reshuffle.
