LG’s Girish Rao to join Essar Steel’s new retail venture as CEO

Girish V Rao, who had recently put in his papers as VP-Sales and Marketing at LG Electronics India Ltd (LGEIL), is joining Steel Retail, the new retail venture of Essar Steel, as CEO. He is joining the venture from September 1 and will be relocating to Mumbai.

His new role is a sea change from his earlier ones, which he had spent in the consumer durable sector. Rao has been with LGEIL for the last four years. As VP-Sales and Marketing, he was reporting to Managing Director, Moon B Shin. Prior to LG, Rao had spent close to 20 years at BPL.

Commenting on his new role, Rao said, “This will be a completely new domain and a challenge for me. It’s about creating a new mindset of bringing a commodity into retail business, which means entering an unexplored territory which holds loads of promise and excitement.”

Steel Retail is a new venture of Essar Steel, which is looking at formalising the set-up for selling steel and has not been attempted yet. There are already 40 outlets operational throughout the country, though now the task is to scale up the venture and make them more visible in the market.
