In a surprise move, Prasar Bharati has removed Swagat Ghosh from the crucial post of Director General-News, Doordarshan. He has been given the charge of the rather insignificant post of Press Registrar at the Registrar of Newspapers (RNI), a media unit of the I&B Ministry.

Ghosh has gone to RNI in place of Neelam Kapur who was DDG (PIB) holding additional charge of Press Registrar, RNI, after the death of the previous Registrar Amitabha Chakravarty. Kapur has now been made a Director in the Directorate of Films Festivals where she has served earlier.

Ghosh, a veteran media professional, had assumed charge as DG-News of Doordarshan only in November last. Prior to that he was in the key post of Director, DAVP, besides having done a stint with Doordarshan News. What is really intriguing is that Ghosh has been removed just a couple of months before his retirement.

There is much speculation in media circles about Ghosh’s sudden exit from Doordarshan News. His removal is being attributed to mishandling of the coverage of the recent UP elections and the Dera Sacha Sauda issue. However, what is of significance is a crucial meeting of DD News stringers held by Prasar Bharati CEO BS Lalli just before Ghosh was shifted. In that meeting the stringers openly levelled charges of corruption against officials at Regional Doordarshan Kendras. Ghosh who was called for that meeting is said to have been rapped by the Prasar Bharati CEO.

Whatever may be the reason for Ghosh’s removal, the Prasar Bharati top brass is silent on the issue. Repeated attempts by exchange 4 media to reach Lalli and Krishna Tyagi, GM Finance, Prasar Bharati, who is holding additional charge of media relations, proved futile.

Meanwhile, additional DG News & Current Affairs, Arvind M Singh, has taken over the news operations at Doordarshan. Interestingly, Doordarshan’s website till carries the name of Swagat Ghosh as its DG News! RNI on the other hand has been quick to update its website where Ghosh’s name appears as Press Registrar.
