Govindraj Ethiraj of BS and Times Now’s Mini Menon headed for UTV; business channel on cards

Govindraj Ethiraj, New Media Editor, Business Standard, who moved to the publication from CNBC TV-18, has put in his papers. Ethiraj is learnt to be headed towards UTV’s forthcoming news channel. UTV officials did not offer any comments on the development.

However, sources close to the situation inform that UTV is in the process of setting up a business news channel. There is intense buzz in the market that building on its ties with Walt Disney, the UTV Group is planning a joint venture to launch a business news channel with ABC News.

Internationally, the Walt Disney Group owns and operates channels such as ESPN and ABC News. Subsequent to the Hungama TV channel sale to Disney, Walt Disney owns a 14.85 per cent stake in UTV.

Meanwhile, Times Now too has lost its star anchor Mini Menon, who was on key properties like The ‘News Hour’. Menon too is expected to join UTV’s new venture.

BS sources inform that he is serving his notice period at the publication. Ethiraj’s responsibility at Business Standard included the financial paper’s Internet presence and the NDTV deal besides other areas of new media.

Ethiraj was Corporate Editor during his stint at CNBC-TV 18. Prior to that, he was with The Economic Times.
