D Shivakumar headed back to India after quitting Nokia

Amidst news that Nokia India has been slapped with a Rs 2,000 crore tax evasion notice by the Income Tax department, there’s more bad news for the Finnish cellphone maker. Its Business Head for India, West Asia and Africa, D Shivakumar has put in his papers, after a stint of eight years.

 

Currently based in Dubai, Shivakumar would be working with the company till June 30. He had moved to Dubai in the latter part of 2011 to oversee businesses in almost 90 countries. Prior to this, he was heading Nokia’s India operations.

Prior to joining Nokia, Shivakumar has worked with consumer electronics Philips India and has been with Hindustan Unilever too. He is an IIT – Madras graduate and an alumnus of Indian Institute of Management – Calcutta.

 

Nokia, in the recent past, has been losing out to rivals Samsung and Micromax, who’ve brought in the smartphone revolution in India. Nokia had been reluctant to adopt open source and was quite adamant in pushing its feature phones, particularly the Aasha series. It was only after it adopted Microsoft’s Windows for its high-end smartphones and brought the Lumia series that Nokia has been able to hold some ground.
