BT’s R Sukumar to join Hindustan Times’ new business daily as Deputy Managing Editor

HT Media Ltd has roped in R Sukumar, Managing Editor of Business Today magazine, as Deputy Managing Editor of its proposed business daily to assist Raju Narisetti, who will head the editorial operations. Sukumar will be joining the business daily in the first week of October this year.

Confirming Sukumar’s appointment, Narisetti said, “Sukumar has been an integral part of the growth and success of Business Today. He comes with great editing skills and good understanding of the Indian business scenario. We are very happy to have him in our team.”

Sukumar has 12 years’ experience in business journalism. He began his career with Business Line as a reporter in Chennai in 1994. He joined Business Today in 1997 as Assistant Editor and was appointed Managing Editor of the magazine in March this year.

Asked about the current status of preparation for the launch of the business daily, Narisetti said, “We are hiring key persons and doing consumer research to understand the market better. There is no fixed time table for the launch as yet.”

When asked about the market he saw for a fifth business daily in India, Narisetti said, “The Indian economy is growing at 8-10 per cent and the ad market is also growing at 30-40 per cent a year. The market for business dailies is also not static, it’s a dynamic one. Yes, there are strong offerings in the market like The Economic Times. But we want to launch a good product so that the consumers will have more choice.”

When asked where he saw the gap in the present market, Narisetti replied, “From the Hindustan Times’ perspective, it will not enter the space unless it is confident of the opportunities that exist. We want to meet the changing needs of the business daily readers.”

As for the name of the business daily, he said, “We have collected a set of suggestions internally and we are now in the process of evaluating them.” He, however, clarified that the name won’t have The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) tag in it though the business daily would highlight WSJ as its content partner.

Prior to joining HT Media Ltd, Narisetti was the Editor of WSJ, Europe, and Deputy Managing Editor of WSJ in New York.
