Asianet to launch Kannada channel, ropes in Sam Sundar as COO

Asianet Communications Limited, which operates a bouquet of channels such as Jewel Box, Medley and Asianet Cable Vision (ACV), is all set to launch a Kannada entertainment channel. The channel has roped in Sam Sundar as Chief Operating Officer for the yet-to-be christained channel. Prior to his new assignment, Sundar was with Yandra Media, a Chennai-based production house.

When contacted, Sundar said, “It is too early to talk about the new channel as everything is at a preliminary stage. The headhunt is on and the studio construction work is underway.” He added that the channel would be “entertainment driven”.

Launched in August 1993, Asianet beams its programmes through Intelsat to over 15 countries in West Asia, South and South-East Asia. Asianet is the oldest Malayalam channel, and is going in for a major expansion. Among other things, the launch of a Tamil channel is on the anvil and it is expected to increase the competition in Tamil Nadu dominated by Kalanidhi Maran’s Sumangali Cable Vision.

For the record, Asianet Communications was recently taken over by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, former chairman of BPL Telecom. Jupiter Entertainment Venture (JEV), Chandrasekhar’s firm, bought 51 per cent from the original promoter, Raji Menon, for about Rs 100 crore.
