Amitabha Datta retiring from ABP Group after 33 years

Amitabha Datta, President - Dailies at the ABP Group, is retiring after a 33-year stint with the Group. July 24, 2009 is scheduled to be his last day at work. Datta rose from the ranks to the position of President, Dailies, and has been overseeing both ‘The Telegraph’ and ‘Anandabazar Patrika’.

Datta has been responsible for implementing the growth strategies of both the publications in the East. He has been actively involved with the launch of ‘The Telegraph’, its sub-brands and editions. He was the first Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Head of ‘The Telegraph’ and continued in the role till recently, barring a two-year tenure as Vice-President of ‘Anandabazar Patrika’.

He had joined ABP in 1976 as Assistant Manager, Circulation. During his tenure there, he had looked after town, agency and upcountry circulation. Thereafter, he moved to the marketing department in 1986 as the first ‘appointment’ Ad Manager in the country. He went on to look after both classified and display categories, and eventually headed the space marketing function for both dailies.

He has been with the ABP Group throughout his career, prior to which he had a stint at Bata India Ltd.
