The Dos & Don’ts of business reporting in a global world

With media conduct in the country under the scanner in recent times, reporting on various issues has become more crucial and competitive. And, when it comes to business reporting, to abide by the ethical code of journalism is something that becomes a big challenge for journalists.

To decipher the various facets of the business reporting, exchanged4media in collaboration with High Commission of Canada organised a workshop on 29 March, 2011 in New Delhi.

The workshop themed ‘Business in a Global World’ was attended by the eminent business journalists of various sections of media including Print, TV and Digital. Mythili Bhusnurmath, Consulting Editor, Economic Times started off the session with giving an overview to the business journalist on the World Economic Outlook.

Meanwhile, business reporting veteran, Jehangir S Pocha, Co-Promoter, INX News Pvt. Ltd., talked about how one can survived as a journalist in the converged media environment. He noted that in future this converged media environment will lead to less jobs for the industry. “And to survive in such environment, journalists will have to become multi-taskers,” noted he.

He pointed out few ‘must-have’ skills for the journalists. Journalists need to be convergent with the technology and buck up skills in depth and breadth.

Speaking on how vital is a balanced report, Sandeep Bamzai, Senior Editor, Headlines Today, remarked, “You can not only run one side of the story. Try and involve both the sides into your story.”

Bamzai said that the challenge is how do you go beyond the apparent? “Grasp and decipher every information and details you get before writing any report. Maintain balance in being sensitive to both the sides because your credibility is equally important as is your institution’s,” commented he.

How one should report on bilateral and multilateral trade? Rohit Gandhi, Correspondent, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, stated, “We need to understand unilateral and bilateral contribution first.” He further added, “Migration of the labour and work, from one country to other and how these have impact on countries should be focussed by the journalists.”

Gandhi also foresees some of the future developments that may include reports on money going in accounts of foreign banks. “We need to follow how it happens and through which route,” remarked he.

The last session of the workshop delved upon the topic of media ethics. Author of ‘Media Ethics’ and senior Journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, commented, “Today journalists work in such an environment that it is very easy to influence them. Corruption in Indian media has gone beyond the individuals and now, journalist act holier than thou.”

He raised few questions in front of the journalist and asked - Do you think your credibility matters? Do want to live 5-star life? Are you willing to take on corporate captains who advertise with your brand?, journalists needs to ask these questions to themselves.

Thakurta stated that journalists need to differentiate between the greed and need. However, Thakurta concluded with positive note, “People have faith in media than police or judiciary and i am hopeful that transparency will lead to less corruption in media.”
