Teacher’s Achievement Awards honours excellence in various categories

The Teacher’s Achievement Awards 2004, announced by Allied Domecq Spirits and Wine (I) Pvt Ltd, saw many of the achievers taking the dais and getting the kudos on the glittering Saturday night.

Taking the honours were BS Nagesh, CEO, Shoppers Stop, who walked away with the Teacher’s achievement award for business; the versatile trio, Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, won the award in the entertainment category; Rahul Dravid and Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore shared the award for sports; and the renowned media personality Karan Thapar was honoured in the communication category. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was presented with the Teacher’s Outstanding Achievement award for his matchless contribution to the world of arts and music.

On receiving the award, BS Nagesh said, “As a retailer it’s good to get an award. We work as a team of 2,000 people and it’s a team effort that has won us this award today. I thank Teacher’s for recognising our effort.”

Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who shared the award with Rahul Dravid in the Sports category, said, “Teachers, achievement and awards are part of our daily lives. Today is a culmination of all of that.”

Although he not present at the occasion, Rahul Dravid sent his note from Kanpur, stating, “To be nominated by a jury of this stature was an achievement in itself. Winning the award is even a greater feeling.”

Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy – the trio was also upbeat about the awards along with Karan Thapar, who won it for the communication category. Thapar said, “There are clearly two kinds of teacher’s, those who fill your heads with facts and those who fill your heads with dreams. This truly is a dream come true.”

A nostalgic Ustad Amjad Ali Khan on winning the award for outstanding achievement said, “I am deeply moved by Ayaan and Amaan’s special composition. While my sons refer to me as Guru but for every child the natural guru is the mother. I am proud of all the young achievers like Shankar Ehsaan Loy; they are the future of Indian music. In classical music, life begins at 60 and I have a long way to go. I thank Teacher’s and the jury for the award.”

Amongst the celebrities present at the award function were Dr Anji Reddy, Vinod Dua, Nalini Singh, Ajjay Bijli, Atul Wasan, OS Kanwar, Kris Srikkanth, Pritish Nandy, Louis Banks, Ramesh Sippy and his wife Kiran, Shefali Talwar, Geetika Ganju, Narain Karthikeyan, among others. This year’s winners took over the reins from Naina Lal Kidwai, Mahesh Bhupathi, Shaimak Dawar, Vikram Chandra and Yash Chopra, who were honoured with the Teacher’s Achievement Awards last year.
