The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards will be held in Delhi on April 13, 2009. The Awards celebrate excellence in journalism, recognise courage and commitment and showcase outstanding contributions and individuals every year. The Awards were instituted by The Express Group as part of the centenary year celebrations of founder Ramnath Goenka.
KG Balakrishnan, Chief Justice of India, woule be the chief guest on the occasion. The Awards function would also include a book release and a panel discussion featuring eminent journalists from print and broadcast media as well as politicians.
The Ramnath Goenka Awards honour journalists from both print and broadcast media, who have shown extraordinary strength of character and integrity while reporting news accurately under dangerous or difficult circumstances. Their story or series would have exposed major issues or problems. It would have provoked the public to recognise a major wrong and raised public awareness of the issue or involved taking extraordinary risks to reach a story that would not have been accessible easily.
The Awards pay tribute to journalists who encourage public trust in the media by courageously practising the highest standards of their profession in the face of political or economic pressures. Journalists, whose work is fair, accurate and which is inclusive of reportage of corruption, malpractice and issues that affect the life of their readers and the well being of the community and the nation.
