Shyam Steel Industries Ltd, in association with Candid Communication, has announced the first ever Excellence in Journalism Awards in Eastern India at a press meet in Kolkata on August 5. Both the parties have entered into a contract for 10 years for this event. The main objective of these Awards is to promote and develop honest and sincere journalism.
Shyam Steel, which has an integrated steel plant in Durgapur, has come up with these Awards as part of their organised corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Candid Communication is a PR agency headquartered in Kolkata.
Members of the Excellence in Journalism Awards Committee comprise veteran journalists Tarun Ganguly, Jayanta Sarkar, Ananta Jana, Raj Mithulia and well-known photo journalist Subrata Patronobis. Also present at the press meet was Lalit Beriwala, Director, Shyam Steel Industries.
The Awards categories include general,business, sports, lifestyle, photography, television and special categories. There will be 15 awards in total. The prize money for all the Awards is Rs 15,000, while the Lifetime Achievement Award carries a prize money of Rs 25,000. In addition, a memento and a Certificate of Honour would also be presented.
A panel of eminent judges chosen by Members of the Excellence in Journalism Awards Committee will further screen the entries to choose the winner from each category. The winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award would be chosen from suggestions made by veteran journalists from the Press Club Kolkata and would be finalised by the Committee Members. To remove any element of bias, the judges’ panel will not be announced till the grand finale, which is slated for September 19.
