Reporter’s Diary: Living my dream, everyday

Joining exchange4media is a new beginning for me. May 14, 2012 will be forever etched in my mind – it’s the day when I started my new life as a journalist. Heart pounding and full of excitement, I had walked into the office and was immediately drawn into the dynamic world that media is.

Every moment brings in new learnings and I am eagerly lapping up everything that comes my way. The life of a journalist is anything but easy – there are story ideas to come up with, people to chase (the most challenging part), deadlines to meet, keeping up with the latest developments in our domain, which is quite vast – advertising, marketing, media, digital, communications, corporate, brands…

I am also beginning to learn that a journalist’s role never ends, news can come in anytime. My work doesn’t stop when I walk out of the office. It is something that I am getting used to. Now I am beginning to appreciate more all the media greats that I watch on television and idolise. Like television, Internet is a medium that never rests, never sleeps. It is on 24x7. And I am beginning to realise that a web journalist also has to be on 24x7.

What has been great for me is that I got to file reports right from the first day of my job. Of course, I am constantly guided by my senior colleagues, who patiently reply to all my questions and check and re-check whatever I file. I must admit, it’s a big thrill to see my byline on the website and I know that it will be there for posterity on the web medium.

The biggest perk, of course, is getting to interact with the big names in advertising and media. They are the people who have driven their organisations with a mix of passion and business acumen – CEOs, Editors, Managing Directors, Creative Heads, Marketing Heads… Every interaction leaves me richer, there is so much to learn.

I guess, Walt Disney’s famous quote sums up what’s going through my mind right now:
“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths”.
