Reliance ADAG launches BIG Music and Home Entertainment

Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) has launched its new initiative in music and home entertainment. The new venture is called BIG Music and Home Entertainment and will have offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. The company has further plans of expansion and is planning more regional launches to create, acquire and distribute regionally or locally relevant content and artistes.

The other active players in the home entertainment space include T-Series, Shemaroo, Ultra, Eros, Excel Home Entertainment, Saregama, Venus and Moser Baer.

BIG Music and Home Entertainment will be launched in two phases. In the first phase, the company will focus on at least 10-12 Indian languages including Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati and Bengali, apart from Hindi and English. In the second phase, the company will roll out Assamese and Oriya language music, among others.

The company also has plans to launch a division for new talent in the music industry, which will manage artistes’ careers, album launches, events, etc. The objective is to provide a platform to new and existing artists for a long-term period.

The company released its first regional film ‘Kireedom’ in Tamil on June 25. ‘Cash’ directed by Anubhav Sinha will be the first Bollywood release under the BIG Music label.

Other films in the pipeline are Salman Khan’s international film ‘Marigold’, two films from Adlabs, Prakash Jha’s ‘Dil Dosti Etc’ and ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’.

JK Ray, who has recently joined BIG Music and Home Entertainment as Head of Content for Languages, East and North regions, said, “The acquisition of contents or labels could be a complete buyout or joint ventures .We are open to all options. Marketing would be a very critical aspect in the launch of the new labels and the group synergy with BIG FM, Adlabs, Zapak, BIG Adda, BIG Motion Pictures, BIG Flicks, Reliance Communication will all play significant roles in it.”

Ray has earlier worked with HMV Music, Mumbai, and Universal Music, as well as with Zee’s Music division.

Ray has had a successful stint as Business Head of Zee Bangla, the regional channel from the Zee stable, during 2003-05. He was Vice President of the Zee Network and handled the sales business for slot, retail and exposure for the entire network. He has also worked for Essel Corporate as Vice President.
