Prasar Bharati, MTNL to join hands to provide cable TV and radio service

Prasar Bharati and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) are holding parleys to provide Cable TV and Cable Radio service in Delhi and Mumbai.

Under the proposed arrangement, Doordarshan and All India Radio channels will be beamed over the cable network. Other value-added services like Video-on-demand, radio-on-demand and Internet will also be provided.

According to broad parameters of the arrangement worked out by Prasar Bharati and MTNL, Prasar Bharati will provide content for this service while MTNL will be responsible for putting the infrastructure in place. It has already laid out optical fibre network in Delhi and Mumbai.

The proposed tie-up between Prasar Bharati and MTNL, according to S. Sundresan, Member (Finance) Prasar Bharati, is in line with Narayanamurthy Committee recommendations for developing synergy between Prasar Bharati and MTNL.

Currently, Prasar Bharati and MTNL are discussing the detailed proposal and costing for the purpose of a MOU. As per the proposal, initially, the Prasar Bharati - MTNL Cable TV and radio service will be launched in Delhi and Mumbai and later it is to be expanded to other metros.

Prasar Bharati and MTNL are also holding negotiations for starting news service on MTNL''s mobile telephony (Dolphin) for which Prasar Bharati will supply the news content.
