Poll ad guidelines by Thursday, EC tells SC

The Election Commission has informed the Supreme Court that it will be able come out with a concrete set of guidelines on political advertisements by Thursday.

A senior Election Commission official told this paper that it has also urged the apex court to grant it more time to delve into the issue of political ads. “We will come out with a proper set of guidelines on the issue by Thursday. It will also give its opinion on whether or not the money spent on advertisements by various political parties could be included in the election expenses,” he said.

The apex court on Monday, while hearing on the Centre’s petition against the Andhra high court order allowing political advertisements, said it will consider making slanderous ads an “electoral offence”.
