N Ram and Kalanidhi Maran among winners at India Today Tamil ‘SIGARAM 15’ in association with Raj TV

‘Sigaram 15’, India Today Tamil’s quarterly initiative honoring achievers from Tamil Nadu, saw the publication awarding 15 eminent business persons from the state at an event on Thursday. Among the winners were N Ram of The Hindu and Kalanidhi Maran of the Sun Network.

The six-week process saw a database of 1200 companies being consulted before the 45 names were short-listed and categorized. Of the 45 nominations in the four categories of Business Barons, Service Czars, Super Marts and Global Challengers, a total of 15 winners were announced.

In the Business Barons category, the winners were A C Muthiah of SPIC, Venu Srinivasan of TVS, N Shankar of Sanmar Group, Azhagappan M of the Murugappa Group, Suresh Krishna of Sundaram Fasteners, K M Mammen of MRF and Dr. D Jayarathnavelu of Lakshmi Machine Works.

The approach, as outlined by V Shankar Aiyer, Associate Editor, India Today, was to look for quality, credibility and innovation. He added, “We looked for companies were strong and which could make the length.”

The Service Czars category saw N Ram of The Hindu and Kalanidhi Maran being honored. Receiving the award and reminding the audience that he was not the CEO of the Hindu group but the publication’s Editor, N Ram said, “We are very pleased to note that the Indian press is growing when all around newspapers are losing circulation.” The other recipient in this category was Dr. Pratap Reddy of Apollo Hospitals.

R Subramanian of Subiksha Trading Services and Nalli Kuppusamy Chetty of Nalli Silks won in the Super Marts category (Retail) while the Global Challengers winners included V Chandrashekar of Pentamedia Graphics and Arun Jain of Polaris. A special award was announced for Mallika Srinivasan of TAFE.

The Jury comprised of Dr. Amit Mitra, Director General of FICCI, N Srinivasan, Director General of CII and Prabhu Chawla of India Today. Aroon Purie, Editor in Chief of India Today, and Prabhu Chawla, Executive Editor, India Today, gave away the awards. In the first edition of ‘Sigaram 15’ in February, the group had identified and honored achievers from the Tamil Film Industry. The current business edition of the awards is to be telecast on Raj TV shortly.
