Ministry dismisses rumors of introduction of Ordinance on CAS

exchange4media News Service

The debate over introduction of CAS continues to sizzle. Recent buzz going in the media circles suggested that Information and Broadcasting minister would push for converting CAS bill into legislation by taking the route of Ordinance. A senior I&B Ministry official however dismissed these rumors.

On condition of anonymity, this senior I&B Ministry official said, "Yes, I have heard this buzz going around. As much as I know, the ministry is not preparing for any such move."

When asked about the next steps on this bill, exchange4media was told, "As of now, the bill would take the normal course of ratification of both houses of parliament. Since Lok Sabha has already passed it, the bill will now be tabled in Rajya Sabha in next session."

This refutation from key source at I&B ministry assumes significance because this will allow additional time for some key broadcasters to possibly lobby against the bill as well as put together alternative market strategies, as an when the bill finally goes through.
