Licensing for journalists a mere suggestion: Manish Tewari

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari’s recent statement suggesting that should be a system of licensing for journalists and a common examination like in the case of legal and medical professions, has drawn sharp reactions from across the media fraternity.

Tewari has now stated that it was a “mere suggestion” and ruled out any measures to introduce entrance a common examination and licensing for professional journalists.

Speaking to the media recently, the Minister clarified, “I had just given a suggestion and not that the government intended to take any such move.” He further stated, “I am not interested in allotting a license to anyone as it is up to the media to decide.”

It may be recalled that reacting to Tewari’s suggestion, the Editors Guild of India had termed it as an “undemocratic” practice and a tool of totalitarian states to control the media.
