Shantilalbhai Shah, Founding Editor of Gujarat Samachar, passed away on February 27 following a heart attack. Shah had not been keeping well for the past 15 days before succumbing to the stroke. Shah, 87, is survived by his sons, Shreyansbhai Shah and Bahubalibhai Shah.
Paying homage to Shah, Gujarat Governor, Nawal Kishore Sharma, described him as a committed journalist who worked till the last moments of his life. Chief Minister Narendra Modi also expressed deep sorrow and condolences on Shah’s demise and said that Gujarat had lost a senior journalist who was sensitive to the interests of the people of the state.
The veteran journalist began his career with an advertising agency way back in 1938. He joined Gujarat Samachar in 1947, which was then owned by a different promoter. Three years later, Shah became the owner of the paper.
Shah’s contribution to the daily’s growth in general and the media industry in particular was tremendous. Under his stewardship, the daily quickly branched out to Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat in Gujarat, as well as in Mumbai. He also actively took part in the industry’s development and served as the INS president in the late ’70s.
