Celebrating the works of poet Gopal Das ‘Neeraj’

In a world where communication has been drastically compressed by cryptic SMSes, the languorous world of poetry seems like overindulgence. But there are enough people out there who still appreciate the beauty woven in words.

‘Ek Shaam Gopal Das Neeraj Ke Sath’ celebrates the work and life and times of one of India’s most well-known poets and lyricists Gopal Das ‘Neeraj’. The special gathering is being organised by Samachar4media, the Hindi news portal from the exchange4media Group. The gathering is to felicitate Neeraj on his contribution to Hindi literature.

The ceremony is being held on June 28, 2012, at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The evening will comprise a panel discussion which will see speakers such as Jwalant Swaroop, who has just stepped down as COO of Lokmat Media; well-known poet and critic Sherjang Garg; poet and Parliamentarian Uday Pratap Singh; and lyricist Bal Swaroop Rahi.

A documentary film based on Neeraj’s life, titled ‘Ek Kavi Hai Mast Faqeer’ and directed by film director Aftab Afreedi, will be screened prior to the panel discussion.

Born in 1924, Neeraj is one of the best-known poets of Hindi literature as well as a popular lyricist who has penned immortal songs for numerous Hindi films such as ‘Dil aaj shayar hai’, Ae bhai, zara dekh ke chalo’, ‘Phoolon ke rang se, dil ki kalam se’, ‘Likhe jo khat tujhe’ and many more. He was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2007.
