Big Pictures, a division of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, has forayed into Bengali film production in a collaborative effort with well-known Bengali film director Buddhadeb Dasgupta for his upcoming film, ‘Janala’ (Window).
Commenting on the proposed film, Mahesh Ramanathan, COO, Reliance Big Pictures, said, “Cinema speaks a global language; a good film holds no language barriers. We are producing regional films in several languages. Considering the contribution of Bengali cinema, its exceptional performers and the audience response, we felt compelled to be a part of the Bengali film industry. We are proud to be associated with Buddhadeb Dasgupta for ‘Janala’ and are confident of a warm response from audiences.”
Reliance Big Entertainment is investing over $1 billion in its filmed entertainment business and will commence rollout of its first set of Indian movies later this year. The company has established production facilities that promise to offer a platform for unfettered creativity and cutting-edge filmed entertainment content.
The company has already signed a slew of top-end directors/ producers, including Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Madhur Bhandarkar, Shyam Benegal, Sudhir Mishra, Vipul Shah, etc. Reliance Big Entertainment also acquired majority stake in ND Studio in Karjat earlier this year. The company has also built a state-of-the-art animation studio in Pune – Big Animation – which will release its first movie later this year.
The production of ‘Janala’ starts on September 9 and is slated for release early next year. The film narrates the story of a young man who visits his old small town school and wishes to contribute to its renovation and upliftment, a task that is well beyond the man’s financial means. The film traces how this simple wish affects Bimal’s life and that of those around him.
Reliance Big Entertainment recently announced development silos with quite a few Hollywood big league actors, including Nicholas Cage’s Saturn Productions, Jim Carrey’s JC 23 Entertainment, George Clooney’s Smokehouse Productions, Chris Columbus’ 1492 Pictures, Tom Hank’s Playtone Productions, Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, and Jay Roache’s Everyman Pictures.
