Anchor Shaili Chopra takes the entrepreneur road

After a stint of nearly three years, Shaili Chopra has decided to move on from ET Now as its Senior Editor and Lead Anchor. Chopra is set to embark on an entrepreneurial journey that would see her traverse across media, putting content creation at the core of her occupation. She pointed out that she is not logging off from television journalism per se but in a decade-long career in mainline business journalism, she has seen all the highs and most of the challenges that there are to see.

“I have enjoyed every high in TV journalism – from breaking news to being in the newsroom to being on air to conducting interviews with world’s top business leaders. Now it’s time for 2.0. Having published my book, I am exploring writing in a big way, a medium I want to master. Once a TV anchor, always a TV anchor...so that’s something I will continue to do in a more freelance way. The future of television as we know will now be on our mobiles or tablet devices, so I am working on some potential ideas that will start up for a big bang later,” Chopra said in conversation with exchange4media.

She has taken a two-pronged approach to her next steps. The first area of focus is on writing, some of which, one has already seen by way of her book ‘Birdies in Business’. Chopra divulged that with so much happening in the business world, her next book may be on Corporate India.

The second focal point would be to put the experience and credibility of the decade gone into ventures that may appear start-up at the moment but have potential to gain scale in the next couple of years. While she is not divulging much yet, her next venture would be in the media and business space, which she has come to know very closely – both as a hard-nosed journalist and also from a softer side reflected in her golf shows, the recent one being ‘Tee Time With Shaili’ on ET Now.

“There are few journalists who can travel the world of golf and business journalism. I have interviewed over 200 top CEOs on the course and having recently written my book ‘Birdies In Business’ on business-golf. I know I have a niche unique to myself and it is definitely worth exploring more. I am travelling to about 30 amazing new courses in the United States starting October, which will give my golfing loyalists a continuous update through an online platform,” Chopra informed.

While she is confident that the ecosystem in India will provide for what she seeks to continue on her entrepreneurial journey ahead, Chopra is also aware of the challenges that await her. “At the end, it is all about content and the right kind of people. The talent is there but I guess one has to see how it is channelised. I am sure I would be faced with all kinds of challenges but I look forward to it. For me, right now it is about taking the plunge and getting down to starting again. Life is full of opportunities and I am looking forward to my entrepreneurial journey which takes me back into experimenting mode both within the media and in the world of business,” she said.

As the Senior Editor and Lead Anchor at ET Now, Chopra anchored the 9PM business primetime slot and conducted key interviews. Prior to this, she was with NDTV Profit. She is one of the trusted faces in Indian business journalism and amongst various other accolades, has won the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism.
