The new Cabinet along with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was sworn in at a ceremony on May 22, 2009 that took place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Anand Sharma, who held the MoS rank in the previous ministry, was also among those sworn in and is tipped to be the next Information & Broadcasting Minister. Sharma is likely to be rewarded for his energetic stewardship of the I&B Ministry over the last five months.
It may be recalled that then Minister of State for External Affairs, Anand Sharma, had been given additional charge of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in October 2008 as I&B Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi was indisposed at that time. President Pratibha Patil had allocated the additional charge to Sharma on the advice of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
Sharma is a former AICC spokesperson. A product of the NSUI and Youth Congress, Sharma began his career as a student leader in Shimla in 1972. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1984 and later in 2004. He was inducted into the Union Cabinet in 2006.
