Discovery is C&S channel of 2004, Hallmark gets category Gold and Silver at Asian Television Awards

Discovery and Hallmark channels rode on a high at the 9th annual regional Asian Television Awards ceremony held recently in Singapore. The awards, aimed to recognise programming and production excellence, witnessed participation from more than 1,500 celebrities from Asia’s television and film industry.

While the Discovery Channel won the Cable and Satellite Channel of the Year 2004 Award, Hallmark won a Gold for Best Script for Mega-matinee. Hallmark also got a Silver in the Best Out-of-House Station Image Promo for its promo ‘Hallmark Story-Lim Kay Sin’.

Said Terence Yau, MD, Hallmark Asia, “This is the first year that Hallmark Channel sent promos to Promax Asia. It is very difficult to produce good promos that can work across the region and appeal to viewers from different cultures. It is encouraging that the industry recognized the quality of our works.”

About 160 entries from 11 countries were nominated for this year’s awards and 68 judges sitting on 10 juries held across the region assessed the entries. Award categories are adjusted to reflect the region’s programming and production trends. Other genres included this year were drama, documentary, entertainment, comedy, news, current affairs and youth. Participating countries included Japan, China, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, South Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam.

“This year’s entries clearly indicate Asia’s commitment to improving production quality across the board,” said Chairman of Judges, Jonathan Hallett. “Local production is at an all-time high and the experience gained under difficult circumstances has clearly stood the industry in good stead,” he added.

The Asian Television Awards are an important component of the Asia Media Festival, currently on in Singapore. The Awards were launched in 1996 to recognise and reward programming and production excellence in Asia.
