Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd (HMVL), publishers of Hindustan, is set to launch the much awaited Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) edition of the Hindi daily on December 16, 2010. With this launch, Hindustan will have a total eight editions in the state. Nagendra, who has been associated with the group for nearly 24 years, will be taking care of the Gorakhpur edition.

Speaking on this development, Amit Chopra, CEO, HMVL, said, “Gorakhpur is a city of great historical importance. Our expansion is a sign of our commitment to readers who, for long, have had high regard for Hindustan and its standard of journalism. We will serve them and partner them in their journey to a better tomorrow. Our readers see change happen all around them, now they will be the change themselves. We at Hindustan firmly stand behind our promise of: ‘Kuchh naya karenge, tabhi toh aage badhenge’. We welcome the citizens of Gorakhpur and its surrounding districts to our ever-growing family of readers.”

The newspaper will face some stiff competition in this market from Hindi dailies like Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala and Rashtriya Sahara.

In the last four years, Hindustan has seen a series of successful launches beginning with Meerut in February 2006, Agra in July and Kanpur in August of the same year. The Dehradun (Uttarakhand) edition was launched in May 2008; Allahabad edition in January 2009; and Bareilly in October 2009.

Apart from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Hindustan is spread across Delhi, Bihar (Patna, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur), and Jharkhand (Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad). However, Hindustan had to shut down its Chandigarh edition few months back owing to falling numbers.

The launches apart, Hindustan started bringing out its Patna edition in all colour and also launched a four-page supplement, ‘Yuva’, in Patna earlier in 2010.

HMVL claims to have a print run of 1.1 lakh copies for Hindustan in Gorakhpur. Moreover, eight sub-editions have been planned to deliver relevant news for the readers of Gorakhpur city and the districts of Gorakhpur, Basti, Deoria, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharth Nagar and Sant Kabir Nagar. These editions will feature extensive localised coverage of the culturally rich and prosperous region of Purvanchal.

Besides Hindustan, HMVL also publishes Hindi magazines ‘Nandan’ and ‘Kadambini’, and the news website livehindustan.com. HMVL is a subsidiary of the HT Media Group, a diversified media group with interests in radio, print and online media.
