The Tribune launches Dehradun edition

The Tribune strengthened its presence in the North Indian market with the launch of its edition in Dehradun on October 20. This is the sixth new edition launched by the paper in the last five years and the second one this year after the launch of its Jammu edition in January.

Prior to the Dehradun edition, The Tribune had launched its Jalandhar, Bhatinda and Jammu editions, besides coming up with separate editions for Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The Dehradun edition is being printed from Chandigarh and carries two dedicated news pages on Uttrakhand, besides a daily city pull-out, ‘Dehradun Plus’.

HK Dua, Editor-in-Chief, The Tribune, explained that the launch of the Dehradun edition was part of the strategy to expand the newspaper beyond the traditional stronghold of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir.

“The idea behind the Dehradun edition is to give the city and the vibrant region around the benefit of the vast range of news coverage of The Tribune encompassing local, regional, national and international developments. Also, with this edition, our news network will become larger and enable us to carry news from Dehradun and Uttrakhand to other parts of the country,” he added.

The launch of The Tribune’s Dehradun edition has been pre-empted by Hindustan Times, which came out with its Dehradun edition from October 1. With The Times of India already capturing 90 per cent of the total English newspaper market here, the entry of Hindustan Times and The Tribune is expected to open a fresh war for marketshare.

Sanjay Hazari, General Manager, The Tribune, said, “This region is predominantly a Hindi newspaper market. However, there is already a market for 30,000-35,000 English newspaper copies, and by focusing on Dehradun and surrounding areas of Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Roorkee, we will strive to capture a substantial share of the English newspaper market. Also, with three leading English newspapers present here, the English newspaper market will grow further.”

Meanwhile, The Tribune is bullish about launching new editions. Dua said, “We will launch more editions as part of our expansion strategy. However, we are going methodically about launching new editions.”
