Tata Steel has forayed into retailing with the launch of Steel Junction in Kolkata. The store will sell all kinds of steel products from various companies and not just Tata products. This store will serve as a pilot before the project is rolled out nationally.
Said B Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel, “Tata Steel has pioneered many things in India… it is in that pioneering spirit that we have started this.”
Steel Junction is a mid-size speciality store, which will retail a range of steel oriented products under one roof. It will offer better shopping experience, better quality of products, greater time and money value to customers through its comprehensive range, services, and in-store facilities.
The entire range of steel, be it mild alloy, alloy steel, or stainless steel, will be covered in the product range in the two sections – ‘Home Construction and Maintenance Products’ and ‘Home Aesthetics Products’.
Maintenance products such as construction re-bars, pipes, bath fittings, galvanised corrugated roofing sheets, and wire products will be available along with kitchenware, crockery, cutlery, lifestyle products, stainless steel jewellery, lamps, wrought iron products, etc.
According to Dr T Mukherjee, Deputy Managing Director (Steel), Tata Steel, the store was “an effective way of presenting steel to everyone”.
In addition to this, Steel Junction also has a knowledge centre, which will provide a platform to learn and understand buyer needs and behaviour and develop systems and processes that would be shared with retailers and distributers of steel products to help enhance the steel retail environment at large.
Tata Steel as the leader in steel has taken upon itself to keep steel as a material fashionable despite the variety of other materials that it competes with today. Said Muthuraman, “It is also the responsibility of the steel company to see that steel gets the rightful position in the minds of human beings.”
