Suzuki to start production of world car in India by October 2008

Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) would showcase its forthcoming car model ‘Concept A-Star’ in the upcoming Auto Expo 2008 in the Capital. The company would also manufacture the vehicle in India and has plans to invest Yen 200 billion for plants by 2010.

The forthcoming model is an A-segment five-door hatchback reflecting a focus on world-class environmental compatibility and comfort. It will have a newly developed Euro 5-compliant 1.0 litre aluminium petrol engine with CO2 emissions, lower than those of European competitors.

“The car would be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki India’s Manesar plant. It would be marketed mainly in Europe and other countries, including India. The production in India is scheduled to commence in October 2008,” said Osamu Suzuki, Chairman and CEO, SMC.

Suzuki also has plans to expand Maruti Suzuki India’s production capacity to 960,000 units per year by March 2010, in line with growing demand in India and a vision of exporting the new world strategic model from India to markets around the globe. It is the first concept car in which designers from Maruti Suzuki India’s research and development division have been involved from the initial stage for it styling.

The company would manufacture 150,000 units of A-Star, out of which 100,000 units would be exported, while the remaining are slated for the domestic market. Apart from A-Star, Maruti is also expected to launch another compact car Splash around 2009-10.
