Pitch Top 50 Brands: Jury's decision is out

The jury meet for this year’s e4m Pitch Top 50 Brands saw the best of the country’s minds come together to shortlist the top five brands in ten categories.

The day-long meeting held on Friday in Gurugram saw its share of deliberations and meticulous discussions across the 10 categories. Right from brands featuring in multiple categories to closely contested spots, which were finally decided by a voting process, the prestigious jury led by Sanjay Behl, CEO, Lifestyle Business, Raymond Ltd, engaged in threadbare deliberations on each category before choosing the shortlisted brands. In a first, smart tabs replaced the popular projector screen to make the jury selection process speedier and efficient.

The prestigious jury also comprised stalwarts like Dilip Cherian, Founding Partner, Perfect Relations; Amit Shah, Associate Director, Marketing, Mondelez India; Dr Nandini Ali, CMO & Member-EXCO, Apollo Munich Health Insurance; Rishi Chadda, Head - Tea Marketing, Tata Global Beverages; Shubhodip Pal, Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer, Micromax Informatics Ltd.; Solomon Wheeler, V Marketing, TATA SIA Airlines Ltd; Sushant Sreeram, Head - Marketing, Xiaomi India; Vishwajeet Parashar, Senior VP and Group Head-Marketing, Bajaj Capital and Yogesh Shinde, VP Marketing, Wagh Bakri Group.

Categories like ‘Impactful Debuts’, ‘Resurgents’ and  ‘Master Connectors’ were the ones which witnessed their fair share of agreements, disagreements, arguments and counter arguments before there was any semblance of consensus.

At the end of the comprehensive jury process, out of the 300 closely contested entries, 150 made the cut to the shortlist. The Top 50 Brands among them will be unveiled on July 6, 2017.

Speaking about the jury process, Sanjay Behl, CEO, Lifestyle Business, Raymond Ltd said, “The process of selection is fairly objective and comprehensive – stage one is when Kantar IMRB gets empanelled to go through a flurry of brands and bring them to an initial shortlist. The second stage is about filtering the brands from 300 to almost 150 brands based on category specific metric and fiscal metric. The third stage is when the jury comes in and goes into reconsideration of stage one and stage two and then evaluates each entry to decide the winners. I feel privileged to be a part of this esteemed jury which comes from diverse industries. This diversity helped us to raise the level of debate during the final selection process.”

The theme for this year’s Pitch Top 50 Brands is—‘Challenges in building enduring brands in the era of the distracted customer.’ To deliver value to the customer and achieve customer satisfaction, brands are constantly innovating new business models. As traditional business models get de-constructed, new templates driven by API’s and the ‘internet of things’ are setting the pace across diverse industries. And, most of these new-age businesses are riding exponential, beyond-belief growth curves as well.

Sharing his thoughts on the jury process, Dilip Cherian, Fouding Partner, Perfect Relations stated, “It was an extremely rigorous process. For example, while looking at the top connectors or master connectors, though I was tempted to look at some niche brands, the jury meticulously and through a process of intense deliberation chose brands that have managed to create a huge footprint.”

Pitch Top 50 Brands will explore the evolving role of marketers, what expertise they need to bring, where they need to be doubling down, what move they need to play and the metrics that will lead to future success.
