Nokia gets CII Brand of the Year Award

Nokia, the finnish mobile handset brand, has emerged Brand of the Year at the "Brand Finale - CII Brand of the Year Award" in Chennai on Thursday.

The award was introduced at the third edition of CII's Brand Summit. Ten brands reached the final round of the Brand Finale. Suresh Krishna, Chairman and Managing Director, Sundaram Fasteners Limited, announced the winner. The other nine brands, which reached the final round were Lux, Rin, Pond's Skincare Lotion, Fair & Lovely, Pond's Talcum Powder, Dabur Chwavanprash, Titan, Eveready and Indane Gas.

Presenting the award, Krishna expressed his longing for the day when Indian brands would dominate such award ceremonies in developed nations. He said, "The time has come and we should look at creating Indian brands, in categories that consumers worldwide can touch, feel and experience. It will win not just awards but hearts too."

Receiving the award, Sanjeev Sharma, Managing Director, Nokia - India, said, "This award is particularly gratifying for us, since we are only 10 years old in India. This is also reflective of the evolution of the mobile phone from a strictly corporate tool to the common man's communication device."

N Murali, Joint Managing Director, The Hindu, and Chairman, Brand Summit 2005, announced that the awards would now be an annual feature. "A 5-step methodology for 360 degree evaluation of brands has been formulated with the help of Vertibrand Management Consulting. The brands have been evaluated not on financial strength or by expert evaluation alone, but through a comprehensive evaluation mechanism", he said.

Speaking to exchange4media on the sidelines of the summit on the evaluation process, Raghu B Vishwanath of Vertibrand, said, "In all, we received over 135 nominations of which 30 moved to Round 2 which we called Brand Wagon. In this round, data sent by the company was used to evaluate the strength of the brand. Brand Microscope and Brand Inquisition rounds followed, where we undertook detailed multiple stakeholder surveys across India and also tested the brand's strength intrinsically through presentations from the brand teams."

The jury for the year's awards comprised of Mani Iyer, Former MD, O&M, Gurcharan Das, former MD, P&G India, Dorab Sopariwala, Research Consultant, Prof.S Ramachandran, Academician, and K N Shenoy, Ex-CMD, ABB.
