Tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi’s company GloboSport is launching three new businesses over the next six months in the areas of digital, TV and movies. The company is also aiming to consolidate its celebrity management business in 2009.
Founded and headed by Bhupathi, GloboSport extends its expertise in the fields of events, TV production, and movie production, and has its own sport division – GloboSport Infrastructure.
Anirban Das Blah, CEO, GloboSport, said, “We are excited about launching new businesses in the areas of digital content, TV and movies. We are launching our digital arm on December 8. Our Chief Strategy Officer, Firoze Shah, has been working towards launching of digital business over the last two years. I and Mahesh Bhupathi will drive the business for six months. We will foray into the TV and movies space in the first half of 2009. We also plan to consolidate our celebrity management business in 2009.”
Blah further said, “2008 has been a decent year. This year, we are growing at 30 per cent. The industry overall has slowed down. In 2008, the biggest trends that I saw are that Bollywood has become the biggest corporate property. Cricket continued to dominate with 20:20 and the IPL, however, football and tennis are also catching up as sporting events. There is huge explosion in digital content. The question was, how could GloboSport monetise digital content? Another trend that I can see is that any agency that works for movies is looking at TV as a revenue driver.”
According to industry estimates, the market for celebrity endorsement is worth Rs 450 crore.
Blah added, “Our competitors are Matrix and Carving Dreams. We want to expand our five verticals – digital content, TV and movies, celebrity management and modeling – in the coming year. We want to expand our services to imaging, shows, casting and new media.”
