Car manufacturers that have released their sales figures till March’16 have all reported a significant growth. Hyundai, Maruti, Honda, and Tata reported growth for the month of February 2016, while Mahindra sales were up by 10% in the month of Jan 2016.
Hyundai’s domestic sales grew by 9.1%, while Maruti’s domestic sale saw a marginal growth of 0.2% as compared to February last year, but saw a growth in annual sales by 11.2% in Feb ‘15 – ’16 as compared to the previous year. Mahindra’s auto sector saw a growth of 10%, Honda saw a growth of 5% in domestic sales and TATA Motors witnessed a growth of 3% in domestic sales.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd. – Hyundai’s domestic sales stood at 40,716 units in February 2016, compared to 37,305 units in February 2015. Hyundai’s domestic sales grew by 9.1% on the strength of strong performance of the three ‘Indian Car Of The Year’ brands --Creta, Elite i20 and Grand.
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. - Maruti Suzuki India Limited sold a total of 117,451 units in February 2016. This includes 108,115 units in the domestic market and 9,336 units in exports. The company had sold a total of 118,551 units in February 2015. The total domestic sales in Feb 2016 stood at 1,08,115 units while the sales in Feb ‘15 was 1,07,892 with a growth of 0.2%. If we compare the annual figures till Feb, the total domestic sales stand at 11,86,456 in 2015-‘16 as compared to 10,66,983 in 2014-’15, which is an increase of 11.2%.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M Ltd.) – Mahindra’s auto sales stood at 43,789 units during January 2016 as against 39,930 units during January 2015, representing a growth of 10%. The Passenger Vehicles segment (which includes UVs, Cars and Vans) sold 22,088 units in January 2016 as against 19,573 units during January 2015, a growth of 13%. The company’s domestic sales stood at 40,693 units during January 2016 as against 37,045 units during January 2015. In January 2016, the Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles segment sold 611 units, registering a growth of 47%.
Honda Cars India Ltd. - HCIL registered a monthly domestic sale of 13,020 units in February 2016. The company registered a cumulative domestic sales of 1,74,629 units in the period April 2015 – February 2016 against 1,66,366 units for the corresponding period last year, marking a growth of 5%.
TATA Motors - TATA Motors LCVs witnessed a growth of 10%, M&HCVs witnessed a growth of 22% in February 2016.
Tata Motors marked a year-on-year growth in the M&HCV segment in February 2016, it witnessed a growth of 22% YOY. Its passenger and commercial vehicles (including exports) recorded a sale of 46,674 vehicles, higher by 6%, over 44,233 vehicles, sold in February 2015. The domestic sale of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles for February 2016 were at 41,532 units, higher by 3% over 40,322 vehicles sold in February 2015.
According to the SIAM report for 2016, in comparison to the 2013 – 14 period which saw a sale of 1,84,23,223 units, the sale in the 2014 -2015 period stood at at 1,97,52,580.
In 2013 – 2014 the production numbers were 2,15,00,165, while in 2014 – 15 the numbers stood at 2,33,66,246 nos.
Passenger vehicles accounted for 13% of the total domestic market share for 2014-15.
The first three months of the year seem to be good for the auto industry and it remains to be seen how the coming months will impact the domestic sales and the export figures.
