Hutch plans to expand retail presence in Chennai

Hutch, the third cellular service provider in the Chennai, is expanding its retail presence and experimenting with different retail formats.

The company's two-pronged retail strategy consists of five Hutch shops (2 company-owned and 3 franchisee outlets) and 150 tele shoppes across the city. While the focus of the tele shoppe would be on sales, the Hutch shop will be equipped to handle customer queries and complaints.

According to sources, Hutch has managed to grow the market by expanding the total subscriber base by 22,000 (from 2,86,000 in June 2002 to 3,08,000 in July 2002) in just one month. Of this, around 14,000 subscribers belong to Hutch.

Despite the growth the company believes that Chennai is still an under-exploited market. According to sources in other categories such as durables or non-durables, Chennai ranks third or fourth in the country but in the cellular space, the city is a distant sixth behind Hyderabad, Bangalore and even Kolkata. Lack of an effective and aggressive retail strategy is the major reason behind the low subscriber base.
