Flat panel TVs, digital audio players to be key drivers of growth for Samsung in 2006

Samsung India Electronics Ltd showcased a wide range of products across multiple product areas at the International Consumer Electronics Show (ICES) 2006, which was held in Las Vegas from January 5-8.

Some of the latest products that were displayed by Samsung included digital music players, digital still cameras and camcorders, large screen displays, many of which will be introduced in India in the next six months.

“Digital media products like MP3 players, digital still cameras, and digital camcorders represent a strong thrust area for Samsung .We are expecting the contribution of our digital media business to grow from 15 per cent to 30 per cent of our audio-video business by 2007,” said Ravinder Zutshi, Deputy Managing Director, SIEL.

Samsung’s 2006 line-up includes the world’s largest commercially available plasma screen, the 80-inch HP-R8082, which will be available in India in the last quarter of 2006.

Zutshi said, “The flat panel market in India is poised to show a strong growth in the Indian market this year .We plan to fuel this growth with our hi-tech, premium products like the 80-inch plasma TV and our new LCD line-up that will be introduced in the Indian market. We expect the contribution of flat panel TVs to our total TV business to grow from 1 per cent in 2005 to around 4 per cent this year.”

“MP3 or the digital audio player segment represents a small, but high potential product category in the Indian market .We expect to grow this category based on innovative products across different price segments, our youth oriented marketing activities and enhancing the access of the youth to these products,” Zutshi added.
