Bajaj Allianz offers new insurance product, e-Opinion Rider, using ICT

Tapping into the power of Information Communication Technology, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance has launched an insurance product – e-Opinion Rider – which will cover the expenses of a second opinion e-consultation services for serious illness in India. The insurance company has tied up with WorldCare Inc, a pioneer in second opinion e-consultation, for this.

An e-opinion is a form of distance healthcare (telemedicine), where a patient’s medical record is transmitted electronically over the Internet to a medical centre where it is reviewed by qualified physicians who provide a written, second medical option and return it electronically.

If a policyholder develops a specified serious illness like cancer and heart disease, that individual may elect to have his medical record, including text and medical imaging digitised, encrypted and sent to WorldCare’s Telemedicine Headquarters in Cambridge, MA, where it will be reviewed for quality control and quality assurance.

The record will then be transmitted to the telemedicine centres of a member institution of the WorldCare Consortium for specialist and or sub-specialist physician review.

A written, second opinion, including a confirmed diagnosis and recommended treatment plan will be then returned to Bajaj Allianz’s medical director within seven working days.

“For the first time, Indian consumers will be able to enjoy timely, affordable electronic access to three of America’s best hospitals for the evaluation of serious illness. We are proud to partner with Bajaj Allianz to provide these life affirming and peace of mind services,” said Nasser Menhall, CEO WorldCare Inc.

“With today’s encrypted and secure technology, consumers in India will be able to secure timely, affordable, e-access to the high quality healthcare at the time when they may need it the most. We believe this ‘e-Opinion Rider’ will provide our customers with the ability to compliment the high quality care they already receive in India with additional input from expert physicians from the US,” said S Sreenivasan, CFO, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance.
