As per the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2011 Q2 results, it has turned out to be a better year for most English and language dailies in Bangalore. While most dailies have registered an increase in average issue readership (AIR) over last year, the quarter-on-quarter percentages don’t look too promising. Barring a few, magazines too have fared better over last year.
Kannada daily Vijay Karnataka continues to retain the top spot, adding 46,000 readers over the last year with an AIR of 7.17 lakh. Prajavani, the Kannada daily from the Deccan Herald stable, is at No. 2 with an 8 percent increase in AIR over the last year. While Kannada Prabha has seen a decline of 20 percent over the last year, losing 18,000 readers, Udayavani has slowly picked up registering an AIR of 1.18 lakh, a 22 percent gain over last year.
The Times of India is the first English daily to make the list at No.3, gaining around 1.12 lakh readers from last year with an AIR of 4.42 lakh. Deccan Herald at No.4, with an AIR of 2.01 lakh, has seen an increase of 23 percent. English tabloid Bangalore Mirror has seen the highest percentage increase – 152 percent over the last year with an AIR of 1.56 lakh. Deccan Chronicle and DNA have seen a decline in AIR over last year. While Deccan Chronicle’s AIR has come down by 20 percent, DNA has lost close to 1 lakh readers over a one-year period.
Daily Thanthi is the only Tamil daily that makes it to the top 10, with an AIR of 8.8 lakh, gaining 28 percent over last year.
Among weeklies, Kannada magazine Sudha comes first with a 38 percent increase in AIR over the last year, currently having 80,000 readers. Taranga occupies the No.3 spot adding 22,000 readers over the last year, gaining around 59 percent in AIR. India Today (English edition) on the No.2 spot has witnessed a decline in AIR by 2 percent, standing currently at 62,000. The Week registered a 10 percent growth in AIR while Outlook saw a 59 percent rise.
Femina reigns as the most popular fortnightly magazine in the city, adding 4,000 readers over the last year. Outlook Business at No.2 has seen a significant increase in AIR, currently standing at 14,000. Filmfare has seen a decline in AIR over the last year as well as over the last quarter.
Kannada edition of Grih Shobha, the No.1 monthly, witnessed a 20 percent slump over the last quarter. While English magazine Good Housekeeping gained 14 percent in AIR over the last quarter, Readers’ Digest continued to see a decline.
