After much speculation on how the World Cup would affect IPL (Indian Premier League) viewership, the IPL ratings are out and are showing a significant increase since its last season. The Indian Premier League (IPL) season 8 week 1 ratings according to TAM data show that there is continued growth in viewership as well as time spent. According to TAM data (All India market CS4+ for the first week (April 7 – 11, 2015) on Sony Max, Sony SIX and Sony Aath which included five matches), IPL 8 brought in an average rating of 4.5 TVRs, which was 42% more compared to the first five matches of IPL 7. The set of matches in week 1 of IPL 7 had brought in 3.1 average TVRs.
The first five matches of IPL 8 scored an average of 11,983 TVTs from 8,364 TVTs in IPL 7, which is a 43% improvement since the previous since. The opening ceremony on April 7th brought in 0.94 TVRs, while the first match on April 8thbetween Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders scored ratings of 5.4 TVRs. The second match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils on April 9th brought in ratings of 4.7 TVRs. The third match between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab on April 10th scored ratings of 4.5 TVRs. There were two matches that took place on April 11th, one between Chennai Super Kings which scored ratings of 2.4 TVRs and the other between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore which scored a good 5.3 TVRs.
Interestingly the time spent by viewers has also increased by 22% from the previous season. This year in week 1, time spent by viewers per match was 51:44 minutes in IPL 8 in comparison to 42:27 minutes during IPL 7. The overall reach also grew by 9% and was sampled by 105 million unique viewers. The reach in terms of percentage of the All India Universe for IPL 8 was 39% and higher from IPL 7 which was 36%.
