After the spectacular success of game shows on the mainstream entertainment channels last year, Zee News is reportedly planning to try its hand at the 'game'. The channel is planning a show on the lines of a Stock market trading game where the participants are given virtual money and can buy stocks using that money. The progress of the participants will be judged on basis of closing price of their selected stocks everyday and at the end of the game period the winner shall be given cash in proportion to the virtual money accumulated by him. Though the concept of stock market based games has been tried earlier but the concept has been limited to the Internet only. Zee too will use its online site, zeenext for the game but actual show will be aired on Zee News where apart from information on the winners eminent stock market analysts will also provide opinion on the next day's movements.
The format of the show combines the thrill of a game show with the excitement of a real show. ESPN too recently tried its hand at a similar format with Super selector, which by initial estimates has done pretty well. Involvement of the viewer in an active way, as opposed to passive means on other shows, is what sets apart such game cum reality shows.
According to Zee officials the show will be aired within the next 10 days. To start with all participants will be given Rs 1 Lac of virtual money, which they can use to buy shares, basis the end of the day prices on BSE. Regularly trading on the site and keeping a track on the wealth meter would by the end of the month fetch the subscribers with trading the maximum amount of money. The highest earner will be rewarded with the maximum amount of money.
Though the show promises to be a one of its kind but the fact that a news channel is experimenting with a 'reality cum game show' format is an interesting development, say media watchers. The spectacular success of Aaj Tak has prompted other news channels to create an impact amongst the audience and for Zee New's this initiative seems to be a part of a larger strategy to give the channel a further push. The game show format has been successfully tried and tested in the last one year or so, especially by Star and Zee is banking upon the fact that the excitement of a contest combined with the lure of money can draw audience.
