Sun show eclipses Star's KBC ratings

This means Koteeswaran's viewership in Tamil Nadu alone has surpassed the national average of Kaun Banega Crorepati by about 10 TVRs. The ratings, released by the research group Intam, are for the week ended November 19. Intam's target group for the study consisted of the homes in Tamil Nadu which have a cable or satellite connection.

The game show, aired on Saturday and Sunday nights, has positioned itself on the weekend platform. Hosted by popular Tamil film star Sarath Kumar, the one-hour show is telecast between 9 and 10 PM. The show's first episode aired on Saturday November 11 had a rating of 20.55 TVRs in Tamil Nadu. This was the most-watched programme on that day on the channel. For the second episode on the following day, Koteeswaran had a marginal fall to close at 19.05 TVRs. The rating for the episode aired on November 18 were 20.34 TVRs, and the show ended the week with a rating of 21.49 TVRs.

Media-buyers, however, are not completely enthused with the ratings. They say Koteeswaran was lower on TVRs compared to Chitti, but the advertisement rates are about 30 per cent higher, which makes the game show less cost-efficient. The show, they insist, may not be able to deliver on the basis of these two areas.

The game shows on Star, Zee, Sony and Sun are reported to be giving away a collective prize money worth Rs 65 crore in the next year. Koteeswaran, on its own, has a prize budget of Rs 10 crore for the first year. Sun TV's managing director Kalanithi Maran has in the past announced that his channel will spend Rs 30 crore on the game show in that period.
