Star is all set to simulcast the first 1-hour episode of the Channel V Popstars show in the last week of January or the first week of February. The last time India’s TV audiences saw a “simulcast” was when Tehelka happened on Zee.
According to the company sources, it will be India’s first and biggest reality show. The multi-million dollar project is basically aimed at zeroing in on five girls who would be groomed and morphed into a pop band. The show has been licensed from Zeal International, part of Sportsworld Media Group of UK.
The company has managed to sign Coke as a title sponsor. Another eight associate sponsors are in the process of being finalised. These will include a cosmetic company, apparel company, audio equipment company and a 2-wheeler company.
By entering into the reality show, Star is hoping to replicate the Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) magic.
It will be yanking off the air, prime time programmes across five of its channels — Star Plus, Star World, Star Movies, Star Gold and Channel V — to simulcast the first 1-hour episode of the show in the last week of January or the first week of February. The programme will have an advertising time of 10 minutes.
Star is looking at the experience of Australia, where a similar reality show consistently beat the ratings of “Who wants to be a Millionaire.” Star Network’s partner in this event is the Times group whose properties — Indiatimes.com and Times Music (Planet M) — would be used to sell the program and the Indipop album which the new girl band will record.
