STAR standoff enters its seventh week

The stand-off between broadcasters STAR India and cable operators in West Bengal on tariff hike entered its seventh week, continuing to rob viewers of a package of five popular television programmes. Talks between STAR officials from Delhi and local cable operators' forum joint action committee during the last two days have failed to reach a consensus on tariff rates, which STAR hiked from March 1 vide a February 23 notification.

Though STAR-India sources expressed hope that the package, consisting of STAR Plus, STAR World, STAR news, National Geographic and STAR Movies' would soon be on air, JAC spokesperson, Tarak Saha, told that they would not budge from their stand unless the broadcasters concede to their demands.

Besides slashing of the 'exorbitant' tariff, the cable operators are demanding to separate the five channels from a consolidated pay slab so that viewers could take their pick from the assortment as lower prices.

STAR's current hike puts the package at Rs 25.75 against the earlier Rs 16.75 per connection per month.
