Star opts BPL as strategic partner for DTH foray

With Star’s DTH plans in the offing, BPL Ltd. is all set to be a strategic partner in the media giant’s foray into consumers’ homes directly, with a host of interactive services and entertainment content. The BPL-Star alliance will see the latter extensively leverage and draw from the capabilities that BPL, especially the services/distribution and the manufacturing sectors.

BPL’s new strategy to extensively pursue the business of developing ‘intelligent’ software for its hardware is also a key part of the overall gameplan, especially with regard to product development for the DTH venture.

According to the industry sources the discussions were still at the exploratory stage, Star’s key intention to induct BPL as a strategic partner was to enable the venture to draw from the extensive resource base BPL had built up.

BPL’s capabilities in the manufacturing, services areas (mobile business) and the distribution and services network will play a key role. Star is keen to study how this business model works and how exactly the entire process of offering services direct-to-home can be worked out including billing, after sales service, customer acquisition/relations, etc., besides the manufacturing area where BPL are one of the strongest players.
