With Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) ending its first full week in UK, STAR TV is hoping that it will hit the jackpot with Britain’s two million Asians. KBC’s UK entry, complete with British Indian contestants from London, Birmingham and Preston comes 16 months after the show was launched in India and nearly a year after Star News and Plus entered Britain as the upstart among Asian TV channels.
ITV, which owns the UK territory license for KBC’s equally successful British version need some persuasion to allow STAR to import the programme into the UK.
According to Lisa Srao, STAR’s VP of business operations said that KBC host Amitabh Bachchan’s superior presentation skills and sheer pulling power has brought 29 million Indians faithfully to their TV set every weekdays.
By offering taster bits of KBC completely free for six weeks on Britain’s second largest cable channel Telewest, Srao says she hopes people will realise we have award-winning news anchors as well and offer the Asian perspective on current events just as people watch CNN for the American perspective.
