To stem surrogate advertising of liquor and tobacco on television, the government is considering the suggestions of a high-level committee on what constitutes such advertisements.
The committee headed by Rajiva Ratna Shah, special secretary, information and broadcasting, has recommended that if a liquor or tobacco company advertised any other product which it was marketing widely it should not be considered surrogate.
At the same time, it held that if such a company advertised just for brand recall without marketing any product other than liquor or tobacco, it should not be permissible.
The committee, which was set up at the broadcasters' meeting last week, made its recommendations on Thursday. The other members of the committee are Kiran Karnik (Discovery), R K Singh (Zee), Mahesh Prasad (Sahara TV), Rajesh Kumar (Sony), Madhavan Kutty (Asianet) and Peter Mukherjea (STAR TV).
